Henry Kilday m. 22 Apr 1799 Greene Co, TN b. 1765/1775 VA d. 19 Dec 1813 Canada Henry: Kilday History The following was taken from "A HISTORY OF THE KILDAYS OF GREENE COUNTY TENNESSEE", by Joe Kilday (jbk16@juno.net ). Joe did the majority of the Kilday research contained herein. "A HISTORY OF THE KILDAYS OF GREENE COUNTY TENNESSEE" According to "A Short History of the Kildays", two brothers (an unknown source identified the brothers as being John and Joe Kilday) came to America, probably in the 1700's, and settled in Pennsylvania. About ten years later a third brother, Ephram, came to America and settled in Virginia. Nothing else is known about Ephram, except that he had a son named Henry. Henry Kilday ca.1765-1775 The first recorded reference to the Kildays in Tennessee was in 1794, two years prior to Tennessee attaining statehood. According to the "Index to Volunteer Solders, 1784-1881", Henry Kilday, during 1794, served as a private in Kennedy's Militia Regiment of the Territory of the United States, South of the River Ohio, commonly known as the Southwest Territory. This Territory consisted solely of that area later to become Tennessee. "The Complied Service Records of Soldiers" who served from 1784 to 1811 states that Henry was a private in a "detachment of infantry, under the command of Captain Joseph Casey, in the Greene Regiment of Washington District Militia, commanded by Daniel Kennedy, Esq., for the protection of the frontiers Southwest of the river Ohio". Henry was called into service March 1, 1794; mustered-in on March 18, 1794 at Knoxville; and discharged June 4, 1794, also in Knoxville. The detachment that was mustered-in consisted of one ensign, two sergeants, one corporal and eighteen privates. In 1798, two years after Tennessee attained statehood, reference to Henry is found in the Greene County taxable property list of Captain Crawford's company as owning no taxable land and one white poll. The next reference to Henry was his marriage to Nancy P. Bowman, performed by John Newman in Greene County, Tennessee on April 22, 1799. Nancy was the second of eight children born to Jacob and Elizabeth Keller Bowman, was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia in 1772. Her family moved to Greene County, Tennessee from Shenandoah County about 1796. Nancy's paternal grandparents were Jacob and Elizabeth Bowman, and her maternal grandparents were George and Anna Barbara Hottel Keller. Anna Barbara was born December 10, 1713 in Alsheim, Germany. Later, a reference was made to a John Kildea on the "List of Free Taxable Inhabitants of Greene County for 1805". Because the Kilday name was then spelled many different ways (Kildea, Kildee, Killday, Kilda) and that there is no other record of a John Kilday, it is possible that Henry and John were either the same person, or they may have been brothers, as brothers frequently named their children after each other, and Henry's only son was name John. After admission of Tennessee to the Union in 1796, the Governor of the state commissioned officers in the militia. Henry Kilday is listed in the "Record of Commissions of Officers in the Tennessee Militia, 1796-1815" as being commissioned as an Ensign of the 3rd Regiment of the Tennessee Militia form Greene County by Governor John Sevier on October 3, 1807. Henry is listed in the 1809 and 1810 Greene County, Tennessee tax rolls as a member of Captain John Olinger's District with no taxable property and one white poll. No references are made to Henry for the 1811 and 1812 tax rolls. Henry's Death On June 18, 1812, the United States declared war on Great Britain, beginning the War of 1812. According to his service record, Henry Kilday was enlisted by an Ensign Peck on March 3, 1813 to serve five years in Lieutenant Stewart's detachment of the U. S. 25th Infantry Regiment. He was present at muster rolls on March 3,1813 and July 31, 1813, but died in the service of his county on December 19, 1813. The reference, "Known Dead During the War of 1812", confirmed the date of Henry's death and noted that Henry had died, not been killed. The 24th Infantry Regiment, part of the American Forces of the Northwest under the command of William Henry Harrison, won the battle of the Thames in Canada against British forces and their Indian allies in September 1813. Henry was probably was the 24th at the time. In order to secure Sachett's Harbor, Harrison's troops were then moved eastward. Leaving a few companies from the 24th Infantry Regiment on the Niagara frontier, Harrison reached his destination on November 16th with some 1,300 men, a fourth of them sick. Of the volunteers left at Niagara, only 60 regulars from the 24th Regiment and 40 volunteers were remaining on December 10th. Henry evidently died at one of these locations and was probably buried there. "The Tennessee Pension Roll of 1835 for Greene County" notes that Henry was a private in the 24th Infantry Regiment during the ware of 1812. According to the pension roll he "... died in the United States' service" on December 19, 1813. His heirs were listed as Sally, Polly, Barsheba, Rebecca, John and Prudence. His heirs obtained a pension, which was half-pay for five years in lieu of bounty land. This amounted to a total of $48.00 per year. "The Greene County Court Records" indicated that on Friday, May 1, 1818, Robert Dobson, with his consent, was appointed guardian to the minor heirs of Henry Kilday. He entered into bond with John Sevier and Hugh Carter. Later that year, on Monday October 26, 1818, Henry's widow, Nancy P., appeared in court to make oath that Sally, Polly, Barsheba, Rebecca, John and Prudence Kilday were the only legitimate heirs of Henry Kilday and all were under 16 years of age when their father died. The actions were probably taken in order to retain the pension that had commenced on February 17, 1815. They continued to receive this pension until February 17, 1820. There is no further mention of a Prudence Kilday in the Tennessee records, but the other five heirs are reference in Greene County marriage records. 4 Prudence Kilday There is some question as to whether this was a child or wife of Henry Kilday. 4 Sally Kilday b. 1800 TN m. Suttle **from the Nodaway Co History, vol. II, pp. 789-91 One of the successful, large-hearted, genial, and unpretentious agriculturalists of th e western part of Nodaway county is Callahill M. B. Suttle, who springs from one of the bes t of old Southern families, whose honor and traditions he has ever sought to bear aloft. His birth occurred in Clinton county, Missouri, in 1856, and he is th e son of Jerome B. and Elizabeth (Layton) Suttle, the father born in Lynchburg, Virginia, o f German ancestry. There he grew to maturity, coming to Clinton county, Missouri, in the latter fifties and remained there until a few years ago when he cam e to Nodaway county and lived with his son, Callahill M. B. of this review, the balance of hi s days, dying in 1902. He devoted his life work to farming, owned a good place of one hundred and forty acres in Clinton county, and was an honest, industrious , and well-liked man, highly respected by his neighbors. His wife was born in Kentucky, an d she had been married before her alliance with Mr. Suttle, being the widow of William Finnell, and mother of John Finnell, of Nodaway township; her death occu rred in September, 1888. One daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Jerome B. Suttle died in infancy. Callahill M. B. Suttle lived on his father's farm in Clinton county until nineteen year s of age, when he came to Nodaway county, locating near Quitman, where he worked at farm wor k by the month. On February 5, 1885, he married Sarah C. Bowman, daughter of Henry and Maria (Hagey) Bowman; she was born near Quitman and when ten years of a ge the family moved to near Burlington Junction, where she grew to maturity. Her father die d in 1866, when she was only thirteen months old. The mother, who is still living in Burlington Junction, was left to rear four children, and she also cared fo r other children besides her own and was a diligent and ingenious woman, rearing her family i n comfort and respectability. a woman of strong vitality, great energy, and puck. She is now seventy-eight years old and keeps her home much neater than mos t young women. She has been the head of her household ever since 1866, when her husband died . Abraham Hagey, father of Mrs. Maria Bowman, was born in Amberson's Valley, southwester n Pennsylvania, in 1803. He married Susan Harnor, a native of Carroll county, Ohio. They ca me to Missouri in 1852, located in Nodaway county, west of Dawson, entering one thousand acres of land from the government. About 1858 he moved into the northw estern part of Green township, near where the Hagey school house is now located, and that wa s the family home as long as he lived. His family consisted of five children, four sons and one daughter: Mrs. Maria Bowman, mother of Mrs. Suttle; Abraha m Hagey, Jr., lives at Burlington Junction; Isaac was killed at the battle of Corinth; Jaco b was killed at the battle of Champion Hills; they were both soldiers in the Union army during the Civil war; John Hagey lives in the northwest part of Green towns hip, in section 24. After his marriage Mr. Suttle began farming for himself, and about three years after h e married he bought a farm of one hundred and twenty acres in Green township, seven miles sou thwest of Burlington Junction, and he has lived in that locality ever since. In 1900 he bought another farm of one hundred sixty acres west of the road fro m the first one, still retaining the first place. In 1908 he bought another of forty acres o n the east side of the road, adjoining the first tract, and in the spring of 1910 he bought eighty acres south of the first tract, making four hundred acres i n all; only twenty-five acres of this vast and valuable tract are not in cultivation. His la nd is well-improved and most admirably adapted for general farming and stockraising, to which Mr. Suttle devotes his exclusive attention. He has been very succ essful in his business career, always alert, progressive, and at the same time considerate an d straightforward in his dealings with his fellow-men. He has a substantial, pleasant, and attractively located dwelling and such outbuildings as his needs r equire. Various kinds of good livestock are to be found here. To Mr. and Mrs. Suttle nine children have been born, of whom three died in infancy. Tho se living are Charles D., who is farming for himself near the family home; Jesse J., Dottie V ., Okalla, Edwin and Edna M., who are twins, are all members of the home circle. **** I thought that I had read elsewhere that the Hagey sons served in the Confederate army.- -JMc 5 Joseph Bowman b. 1 Sept 1838 Fountain Co, IN m. Grace, the developer and majority owner of Osceola's Lakeside Casino Resort, has died after a long battle with leukemia. Grace, 69, died Sunday night at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, of complications from leukemia, his family said in a statement issued Monday. Funeral services are pending. Grace, a businessman from St. Joseph, Mo., headed the Southern Iowa Gaming Co., which constructed the $50 million Lakeside Casino Resort complex that opened in January 2000. Last year, the casino, which employs about 500 people, drew nearly 1 million customers and had casino revenue of about $55 million. Grace succeeded in winning approval for a casino license from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission in November 1997 after Illinois-based Argosy Gaming Co. twice had license applications rejected. Fred Wood of Osceola, president of Clarke County Development Corp., said Monday that Grace had the vision to develop a solid plan for a casino that would be endorsed by state regulators, including the construction of an interchange on Interstate Highway 35 at Osceola. "Bill's word was just like gold," Wood said. "If he told you he would do something, he did it." Osceola Mayor Fred Diehl said he was shocked to learn of Grace's death. He said he always had an open and forthright relationship with Grace. "I had a great deal of respect for him," Diehl said. Grace founded a company that developed and managed shopping centers, office buildings and other properties in western states. He also had business interests in casinos in St. Joseph and La Grange, Mo., and White Cloud, Kan., and in the Woodlands Race Track in Kansas City, Kan . Survivors include his wife, Kathy; two sons; a daughter; and six grandchildren ============================================================= From the St. Joseph Gazzette Tuesday, April 27, 2004 Casino owner Bill Grace dies By GREG KOZOL gregk@npgco.com Bill Grace posed in the current St. Jo Frontier Casino when it was being built. (St. Joseph News-Press file photo) Bill Grace may have been best-known as the casino owner in St. Joseph, but he was remembered for more than that Monday. Mr. Grace grew up on a farm during the Great Depression and built a business empire that included gambling operations in four states and retail, commercial and hotel developments from Alaska to Mexico. He built glitzy casinos but loved to watch the cattle on his farm in Gentry County. He was known as a hard-nosed businessman who sparred with public officials, but he quietly gave to 4-H programs, schools and the Special Olympics. Mr. Grace, 69, died Sunday night at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He had battled leukemia for several years. He's one of those unique individuals that the world is going to miss, said Bruce Schmitter, vice president of Grace's gambling operations in Missouri, Iowa and Kansas. You knew when Bill was in the room. He had a lot of character. Everybody is going to miss him. Mr. Grace was majority owner of the St. Jo Frontier Casino, which marks 10 years in business this year and was one of the first riverboat casinos in Missouri. The St. Joseph facility is one of the few locally owned, locally operated casinos in an industry dominated by Harrah's Entertainment, Ameristar Casinos and other conglomerates. Mr. Grace was a catalyst for bringing a casino to St. Joseph at a time when the city had just lost hundreds of jobs following the Flood of 1993 and the closing of Monfort Pork and Sherwood Medical. We needed an uplift, said Dick DeShon, a St. Joseph businessman and minority owner of the Frontier Casino. It created a lot of good jobs. Bill was a visionary and saw the opportunities. Mr. Grace's roots were closer to Great Depression hardship than slot machines and roulette wheels. He was born on a farm in Burlington Junction, Mo., on Sept. 10, 1934. My dad was basically a farmer at heart, said Howard Grace, one of three of Mr. Grace's children. You could never take the farm out of him. Others would golf. He liked going up to the farm and looking at cattle and crops. After a stint in the Army, Bill Grace received a bachelor's degree and an MBA from the University of Arizona. He taught economics at Arizona State University before realizing that there would be a better way to provide for his growing family. He and his wife, Kathryn, who is from Maryville, had three children: Howard Grace, Matthew Grace and Heather (Grace) Kaiser. In 1966, Mr. Grace moved to St. Joseph and started W.M. Grace Construction Co. The company expanded throughout the 70s and 80s into commercial construction, offices, public buildings, hotels and shopping centers. Offices were located in St. Joseph and Phoenix. He was an entrepreneur who wasn't afraid to take a risk, said Mr. Schmitter, who worked with Mr. Grace for 10 years. He created a lot of jobs for a lot of people and created a lot of infrastructure. Today, the companies that Mr. Grace started employ more than 2,200 people. His real-estate firm, W.M. Grace Development Co., built 350 shopping centers that encompass more than 30 million square feet of space. His business ventures include hotels in Arizona, Alaska, Iowa and Mexico. The expansion into casino gambling came in the late 1980s, when Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. He opened the first casino in Arizona and saw an opportunity as gambling laws were loosened across the country. Mr. Grace became majority owner of the Frontier Casino, the Woodlands racetrack in Kansas City, Kan., the Mark Twain Casino in LaGrange, Mo., and the Lakeside Casino in Osceola, Iowa. He also has an agreement to manage the American Indian casino in White Cloud, Kan. He was a very smart business person, said Larry Seckington of St. Joseph, general counsel for Mr. Grace's casino operations. He knew what he wanted to do and what it took to get it there. As casino owner, he sometimes butted heads with regulatory officials and elected leaders. He fought with the city over rights to riverfront land and got into a prolonged legal battle with the Missouri Gaming Commission and state Attorney General Jay Nixon over efforts to open an expanded riverboat facility. The new riverboat, located about a mile north of the downtown area, opened after a five-month delay in 1998. I couldn't say we always got along, said Tom Mann, the presiding commissioner for Buchanan County. That was Bill. That was the way Bill conducted his business. Bill was a tough businessman, but that was not all bad. I would say we were friends. He was a strong advocate for St. Joseph. Behind that toughness was a softness for schools, farms and 4-H programs. Until he developed his illness, Mr. Grace frequently visited his 4,000-acre farm and cattle operation in Gentry County. He really enjoyed coming to the farm and seeing his cattle, said Jerry Knight, who managed the Grace farm property in Gentry County. He liked to drive around and look at everything. He was the best guy I ever worked for. He mainly let you do whatever needed to be done. Mr. Knight said Mr. Grace donated money for a new football field and track at the high school in Albany. He also bought a grand-champion 4-H steer every year. In St. Joseph, Mr. Grace contributed $600,000 to the Miracle on 36th Street campaign at Bishop LeBlond High School and served as general chairman of the project, which resulted in a new chapel, gymnasium, classrooms and other improvements. Frank OMalley, chairman of the capital campaign, said the new gym will be dedicated to Mr. Grace in November. I never heard of anyone turned away after soliciting a donation from Bill Grace, Mr. OMalley said. He was a super guy. Howard Grace said his father will be buried in St. Joseph because he remained devoted to the Midwest all his life even though much of his business success came in the Southwest. Services are pending. St. Joseph was his town. He loved St. Joseph, Howard Grace said. He worked seven days a week his entire life. He only had one speed and that was go. ======================================== From the Kansas City Star 4-27-2004 Businessman with casino interests in four states dead at 69 Associated Press ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - William M. Grace, a self-made entrepreneur whose wide-ranging business operations included gambling casinos in four states, is dead of cancer at 69. Grace died Sunday at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he was undergoing treatment for leukemia, said Larry Seckington, corporate counsel for W. M. Grace Cos. Inc. of St. Joseph. Seckington said Grace had been there since January and was to have undergone a stem cell surgical procedure later this year. He suffered a heart attack on Friday and never regained consciousness, Seckington said. Casino interests of Grace's businesses include the St. Jo Frontier Casino in St. Joseph, The Woodlands pari-mutuel dog and horse racing complex in Kansas City, Kan., the Mark Twain Casino in LaGrange, Mo., and the Lakeside Casino and Resort in Osceola, Iowa. A Grace business also manages the Indian-owned Casino White Cloud in White Cloud, Kan., and he had opened the first casino in Arizona, where one of his companies operates a hotel linked with a tribal casino in Prescott. His St. Joseph casino was among the first riverboat casinos in Missouri and its opening following the catastrophic flooding of 1993 and the closing of a pork plant and medical business helped provide needed jobs for the area. "We needed an uplift," said Dick DeShon, a minority owner of the Frontier. "It created a lot of good jobs. Bill was a visionary and saw the opportunities." James B. Deutsch, a Jefferson City lawyer who has represented Grace's Missouri gambling operations, said his approach was what state lawmakers originally wanted from casinos. "He was exactly what the authors of the original legislation had in mind, not major gaming enterprises but hometown enterprises with cruising riverboats," Deutsch said. Deutsch called Grace "a tough businessman but an honest guy. He always delivered what he promised." "He was always the voice of the small gambling operator in Missouri," said Troy Stemming of the Ameristar Kansas City Casino and Hotel, president of the Missouri Riverboat Gaming Association. "He constantly reminded us that we needed to carefully evaluate the spending of his money on our joint ventures, contrary to the rest of us who were spending our companies' money." After buying The Woodlands out of bankruptcy in 1998, Grace sought time and again without success to get the Kansas Legislature to allow slot machines and other casino games at the race track, struggling financially ever since casino gambling came to Missouri. A farm boy from Burlington Junction, Mo., Grace served in the Army and earned bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Arizona, later teaching economics at Arizona State while working as a field service engineer for Reynolds Aluminum. He returned to Missouri in 1966, starting the W. M. Grace Construction Co. at St. Joseph. The company, which eventually had an office in Phoenix as well, expanded throughout the 1970s and 1980s, building offices, public buildings, hotels and shopping centers in a number of states. Today the companies Grace started employ more than 2,200 people. Before his death, Grace had designated Bruce Schmitter, a vice president, to lead the company's gambling operations. Schmitter said Monday that future plans are uncertain. Members of Grace's family have controlling interests in his various business ventures, and Schmitter said the family's plans for them are not known. "For the near term we'll do business as we've always done business," he said. But the long term, he said, "depends on what the family wants to do." Grace is survived by his wife, Kathy, sons Matt and Howard, daughter Heather Kaiser and six grandchildren. ============================= From the Kansas City Star 4-27-2004 Woodlands majority owner dies at 69 William M. Grace played vital role in Midwest gambling By RICK ALM The Kansas City Star William M. Grace, majority owner of The Woodlands race track and several Midwestern casinos, died Sunday at a Houston hospital where he was undergoing treatment for leukemia. He was 69. Larry Seckington, corporate counsel for W.M. Grace Cos. Inc., based in St. Joseph, said Grace suffered a heart attack Friday and never regained consciousness. Seckington said Grace had been an outpatient at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston since January and was preparing for a stem cell surgical procedure later this year. Unfortunately he never got to that point, he said. Before his death Seckington said Grace had designated Bruce Schmitter, a corporate vice president, to lead the company's gaming operations in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Arizona. Schmitter said Monday the future was uncertain. Grace family members now hold controlling interest in Grace's far-flung business enterprises, but Schmitter said the family's plans for those subsidiaries, partnerships and operating divisions were unknown at this point. For the near term we'll do business as we've always done business, said Schmitter. For the long term, It depends on what the family wants to do. Seckington called the plain-spoken and often gruff Grace one of a kind, who was boss, friend and teacher. He really knew how to run his companies, said Seckington. I learned more here in the last 10 years than all of my previous life. Affiliated companies include W.M. Grace Entertainment Inc., W.M. Grace Hospitality Inc., W.M. Grace Construction Inc. and W.M. Grace Development Inc. Through various groups, the Grace family holds controlling or partnership interests in The Woodlands pari-mutuel race track in Kansas City, Kan., the St. Jo Frontier Casino in St. Joseph, the Mark Twain Casino in LaGrange, Mo., and Lakeside Casino and Resort in Osceola, Iowa, and manages the tribal-owned Casino White Cloud, near White Cloud, Kan. Jefferson City lawyer James B. Deutsch, who has represented Grace's gambling interests in Missouri from the beginning, said Grace epitomized the local ownership of modest casino operations that Missouri lawmakers had in mind in 1992 when they first set legalized casino gambling in motion. He was exactly what the authors of the original legislation had in mind, said Deutsch, not major gaming enterprises, but hometown enterprises with cruising riverboats. Deutsch remembered Grace as a tough businessman but an honest guy. He always delivered what he promised. He was a shrewd businessman who knew his markets, added Deutsch. He was the most sensible guy you could imagine. When the Las Vegas-based casino owners finished their Missouri riverboat gambling palaces in marble, he finished his in Formica, said Deutsch. Troy Stremming, an executive at Ameristar Kansas City Casino and Hotel and president of the Missouri Riverboat Gaming Association, called Grace an original. He was always the voice of the small gambling operator in Missouri, said Stremming. He constantly reminded us that we needed to carefully evaluate the spending of his money on our joint ventures, contrary to the rest of us who were spending our companies' money. He was a hard worker and self-made businessman. He was a spectacular person. It's a sad day. Grace bought The Woodlands through a bankruptcy court sale in 1998 and sought unsuccessfully every year since then to persuade the Kansas Legislature to allow slot machines and other casino games to bolster the bottom line and keep the financially struggling track open. Other Grace interests include housing units for the elderly in Independence and Liberty, numerous commercial properties in St. Joseph and a 4,000-acre farm and cattle ranch near Albany, Mo. The privately held Grace group also has construction, development and real estate management interests in shopping centers, hotels and other properties in several states. The company also operates a hotel in cooperation with a tribal casino near Prescott, Ariz. Grace, born in Burlington Junction, Mo., earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Arizona after his military service. He later taught economics at Arizona State University while working as a field service engineer in Phoenix for Reynolds Aluminum. He returned to Missouri in 1966 and founded the first of his companies in St. Joseph, later expanding with various division headquarters and other offices in Arizona, Illinois, Wisconsin and Colorado. The construction company built many public structures in the region, including on the campuses of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo., and Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph. Grace was active in Arizona economic and foreign trade development activities. He also was a board member for Bishop LeBlond High School in St. Joseph, where he was a major contributor to a building fund and was establishing a scholarship program for underprivileged students at the time of his death. In Houston, Grace was a board member of the recently formed International Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research Institute. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, sons Matt and Howard, a daughter, Heather Kaiser, and six grandchildren. Arrangements were pending at the Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service in St. Joseph. ===================================================================== From the Des Moines Register 4-30-2004 W. M. Operating over a multitude of states, the company moved a branch office back to Phoenix in 1970 and now maintains this office as their corporate headquarters for this portion of Mr. Grace's businesses. Bill has been active as a Director of the "Arizona Association of Economic Development", receiving the Developer of the Year award in 1987, serving as president of the AAED in 1992, and being honored again as the Small Business Member of the Year in 1994. Bowman The Western boundary of Missouri, in June 1837, was extended to include the "Platte Purchase " area. The land had been previously given to the Indians for a permanent home. The strip o f land was about a hundred miles long on the eastern side, and about one hundred fifty miles in length on the western boundary; averaging about fifteen mile s in width. It was comprised of the present Atchison, Holt, Andrew, Nodaway, Buchanan, and P latte counties. The Indians were moved out, but, in some cases, not before early settlers, seeking new homes to be had from the government for a small price , came to the new country to establish homes. It was to this "Platte Purchase" country that the six Bowman brothers and their sister, Jane , came with their families from Indiana in 1841.* They were the sons of Jacob and Catherin e (Starns) Bowman, who were originally from North Eastern Tennessee. They left three brothers and five sisters back in Indiana - Fountain County. Th e six brothers were Thomas, Samuel, Henry, Joseph, Abraham, and Jonathan. These pioneering B owmans were the ancestors of many North Western Missouri families of the present day. In the years just preceding the Civil War, the pioneering families were very industrious an d self-reliant, but settled for protection from Indians and to help each other, in nearby loc alities. They helped each other and, when need arose, their neighbors. They were an open-hearted , open-handed people. This family, coming from southern states originally, Virginia and Tennessee, were sympatheti c to the Confederacy in the conflict between the states, as were many others at that time i n that section of Missouri, as we shall discover later in this story. It is with the brother henry Bowman's wife with whom we are most interested in this writing . She was, before her marriage to henry, Mary Ann Young of Bolckow, Missouri. They were mar ried in May 1845.** They bought one hundred and twenty acres of land from the government, paying a dollar and a quarter an acre for the patent. The land lie s at the north east edge of Quitman, Missouri, and is presently owned by Richard brooks. The Old Emigrant Trail ran north out of Quitman, Missouri, following the Bowman's west lin e for about a quarter of a mile, then turned east, crossing Bowman's Branch south of where W eddle's Branch empties into the Bowman. Henry and Mary Ann built their log cabin home just north of the bend in the Old Emigrant Trail. They built the log ca bin, dug a well, set out an orchard, and determined to make a good life for themselves, but o nly after a hard trek of some thirty-five miles by present day reckoning. They traveled with a yoke of young oxen hitched to a two-wheeled cart, which carr ied all their belongings. The cart was so fully loaded that it was necessary for them to wal k, each carrying a chair for which no room was available. After making this long and wearisome journey to their new home, they discovered that the Ind ians had been there before them, having left behind them a member of their tribe, whose bod y had been tied to the branches of a tree, high off the ground. Mary Ann was a very versatile homemaker, doing much for the comfort and well-being of her fa mily, by making use of the things which nature provided in her surroundings. From the inne r bark of the hickory trees she wove many lovely designs into the bottoms and backs of chairs. From the bark of the linn trees she wove bottoms for the beds , on which straw tick or feather beds were placed. In later years, Mrs. Bowman had a two-story house built with stairs going up through the mid dle of it. After it was finished, she drove her horses all the way to St. Joseph, Missouri , and purchased a chest of drawers for her new home. It is said that this was the first chest of drawers in the new settlement. After ten years of farming, and starting a family, which consisted of two daughters, Catheri ne and Barbara, Henry died (1855). Mary Ann, who was richly endowed with the true spirit o f the American pioneering woman, continued to make a home for her two children and two sons of Jonathan Bowman, her husband's brother, their mother having die d when the eldest son, Henry, was thirteen and George but three years of age. Some years lat er, their father remarried and they left their beloved aunt Mary Ann to live with their father. In later years, henry married his cousin Barbara. In 1862, Mary Ann married James Givens, and they had a son James Givens, Jr.*** But once aga in, after four years, she was left a widow with a family to raise, Mr. Givens having died i n 1866. Others said of her, "If a Saint ever lived, it was Mary Ann." Twice widowed, with three small children to rear, this resourceful woman could alway s find a way to be helpful to others. A great many of the settlers of the Platte Purchase were Southerners or people who were of t he same convictions regarding the State Rights question, which was an issue of that period o f time. Many of the people were reluctant to bear arms against their own relatives, as would have been the case in many instances. Mary Ann's brother-in-la w, Jonathan, and her nephew, Francis Marion Bowman, bore arms in defense of the Confederacy . Jonathan gave his life and Marion lost his leg and spent many months in a northern prison camp. A great many who hesitated to take up arms were "hiding ou t" at that time. Kind-hearted Mary Ann provided food for some of these men, by placing foo d in a hollowed out stump in her timber land. Upon one occasion, when a Dr. Davis went into hiding, knowing she could be trusted to help those who were ill o r wounded, he left his bag filled with medical supplies with her, explaining to her the use o f each one of its contents. She could, and did, help many who needed the medical care. There were those who knew on which side of the conflict her sympathies lay, and her home wa s the target of raiders on several occasions. On one such they threw her saddle down the wel l, but at another time they were not so successful, because this determined woman upset a hive of bees, and the would-be marauders were quickly routed. Thoug h the raiders often frightened them badly, and did a great deal of damage, they escaped the m ore serious type of raiding which befell some of the other Bowman families, such as having everything destroyed by fire. Samuel Bowman and Joseph Bowman los t their homes by fire and their livestock was taken. Samuel sold his 300 acre farm for fiv e dollars an acre and moved to Arkansas. He died there. During this distressing time, an elderly couple were admitted to the county farm to be care d for. But they were so unhappy, Mary Ann took them in and let them live in her old log cabi n home on the Old Emigrant Trail. Jack Bowman, nephew of Mary Ann, who was helping her with the farm work and cutting wood for her, helped her look after the ol d people. She was a True Lady and a kind and Christian person who held a very special place in the hea rts of the Bowman family who love and cherish her memory. _________________________ * While family tradition says the Bowmans came to NW Missouri in 1841, Jonathan Bowman, my g- g-grandfather, was in Fountain County, IN, in 1845, when he married, and still in 1850 for th e census. He emigrated with his parents to Nodaway county, Mo., where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Collings on March 12, 1874. To this union were born three children, one boy who died in infancy, and two girls, Bell and Elonia, who are both married and live in Ohio. His wife dying in 1877, he married Mrs. Katherine Hutchison, on Aug. 6, 1885, in Onawa, Iowa. To this union one daughter was born, Barbara C. Bowman, who resided with her father at home. This matrimonial tie being broken by the death of the wife and mother on Nov. 1, 1891, he was again married, this time to Miss Missouri Colvin at Quitman, Mo., on May 19, 1894. He was converted and united with the Christian church at Moorhead, Iowa, in 1889, and reunited with the same church at Elmo, Mo., in 1897. He departed this life on Oct. 2d, 1901, aged 53 years, 1 month, and 17 days, leaving the wife and three daughters of his own family and three brothers and one sister of his father's family with numerous relatives to mourn his loss. Funeral services Thursday, Oct. 3d, at the home of the deceased, in charge of J. A. Bush, sermon by the pastor of the Clearmont Christian church and burial at Lamar cemetery. Thus is taken away from life one who was almost universally liked, and whose friends were as numerous as his acquaintances. He was, until recently, a strong, robust looking man, and the very picture of health and strength and apparently bid fair to live many years.
